Director’s Note

The Infinite Energy of Ada Lovelace is about a brilliant woman mathematician torn between the possibility of her genius and the expectations of her social role. Instead of a traditional conflict with another character, she navigates an invisible conflict with society. Her story investigates the question of whether an individual who steps outside of society’s molds must choose between their destinies – or whether they can find a way to illuminate a new space between them. Anyone who has ever felt like an underdog resisting society’s strictures can see themselves in Ada Lovelace.

The production is set in 1842: ten years before her untimely death at age 36; one year before she published her groundbreaking Notes to Italian engineer Luigi Menabrea’s article, which contains Ada’s history-making algorithm that many consider to be the first computer program; and one year after she learned of a devastating scandal in her family history, which haunted her for the rest of her life.

Ada met Charles Babbage at a social gathering when she was 17 years old and he 42. She was fascinated by his Difference Engine, an early version of the calculator, and he quickly became her mentor. Two years later, she married William King, who thereafter became the Earl of Lovelace, making her Countess Ada Lovelace. In her letters to Babbage discussing mathematics, she unconventionally addressed him as “Babbage” – the surname being a form of address usually reserved between two men. He always addressed her as “My dear Lady Lovelace.”

We began our evening with you with a soirée of songs by Fannie Mendelssohn, a contemporary of Ada Lovelace who navigated similar challenges as a woman composer of the period, despite her undisputable genius. My team and I curated your descent into the world of Ada’s mind, evoking her vision of “poetical science” in the immersive installations that shaped your entry into Ada’s world. The set evokes the mechanisms of Ada’s mind and celebrates her vision for the collaborative possibility of technology. Following The Infinite Energy of Ada Lovelace is an equally energetic cabaret that explores themes of gender roles, science and technology, and the power of imagination.
