New Camerata Opera presents a fresh, gripping take on Bizet’s Carmen. In this modern adaptation, Carmen is a social media influencer with a massive following, and Don José is an obsessed fan who spirals into delusion. Directed by John de los Santos and conducted by Michelle Rofrano, this bold adaptation explores the seductive dangers of social media obsession inspired by a haunting real-life story.

Director’s Note

When a piece reaches the ubiquity that Bizet’s Carmen has, the goal when reviving it again must be unearthing new surprises in the familiar. Having staged it many times in its traditional setting, I was eager to find a concept that turned even Peter Brook’s 1983 reimagination on its head.  The strength of Carmen’s libretto lies in the dimensionality of its characters and their utter incompatibility with one another. Each of the four principals remains desperately lonely in the pursuit of their obsessions. These themes of loneliness and obsession are truer than ever in today’s culture of influencer worship where lives are lived (and ended) through a digital filter of idealization and inauthenticity. Obsessive devotion to these new idols by lonely and unseen individuals has led to tragic outcomes. Women such as Christina Grimmie, Alexis Sharkey, and Janae Gagnier all amassed sizeable followings and were all killed by men in connection with the personas they created. Their murders serve as a warning of the dangers of this new realm of celebrity when it lures certain forgotten members of our society into its cold arms. We’ve chosen to depict our version of the opera’s heroine in the same light. This “Carmen” is only a persona adopted by a woman determined to survive in a modern world where your worth only lasts as long as someone is watching.
